Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) — Skills for the Big Waves
Skills for big feelings — regulate without shutting down.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy focuses on helping you build concrete skills in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The "dialectical" part is the both/and at its heart — you are doing your best, and you can do things differently. DBT is one of Tea Time Therapy’s named specialties, offered virtually across Massachusetts.
Good fit if
- Emotions arrive at full volume with no dial in between
- You act in the moment and regret it shortly after
- Relationships feel like a series of ruptures and repairs
- You want skills you can actually practice, not just insight
Most people bounce between two stories: "I’m fine, this is everyone else’s problem" and "I’m broken and it’s all my fault." DBT refuses both and holds the harder truth — you’re doing the best you can with what you learned, and you can build something better. Acceptance and change, at the same time.
Mindfulness: noticing what’s happening before it runs you. Distress tolerance: getting through a crisis without making it worse. Emotional regulation: understanding and shifting the intensity. Interpersonal effectiveness: asking for what you need and holding a boundary without torching the relationship.
These are skills in the ordinary sense — you learn them, you practice them badly, and then you get better at them.
DBT is a named specialty at Tea Time Therapy, and our clinicians draw on DBT skills — particularly for emotional regulation — within individual therapy. Ask during your consultation which clinician’s approach fits what you’re looking for.
